On my dawn run for the papers this morning, I spotted the sign above on a phone pole in the neighborhood.
Hmmmmm. A Plainfield-oriented dating service? What could that be about?
Took a snap and decided to check it out once back at the command center.
So, it purports to be a matchmaking service where a man can find a woman or a woman a man, in the Plainfield area. (Are they missing something about Plainfield -- like no man-man or woman-woman matching? Must have done lots of market research.)
OK. Who are these people? Checking the WHOIS database shows the name was registered on 1/25/2007, anonymously, via GoDaddy, a large discount domain registry operator.
So, let's see what kind of entries we have for singles...
Oops! You gotta register to get access to the listings. And look what information they want you to give them: first and last names, city, ZIP, home phone, email, gender, age, marital status, education, occupation and annual income.
Can you smell a rat?
Let's see.
For access to the POSSIBILITY of some other names in the Plainfield area, you will be giving the anonymous operator of this site all the marketing information needed to put you on every spammer's email list in the universe.
And, the icing on the cake?
You'll be getting a followup phone call.
I suppose this is an essential service for all the singles who are going to buy those transit-oriented condos.
