Changes to the 'Comment' function on Plainfield Today

Word Verification example.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later.
Plainfield Today has drawn enough attention and visitors from the world beyond Plainfield that I have now begun to get 'comment spam.'

These are automatically generated messages hustling everything from diet pills to those little blue erectile dysfunction pills to unclaimed bank accounts in Nigeria.

Only instead of showing up in emails (thankfully, that one seems to be mostly licked!), they show up as comments on Plainfield Today posts.

There is a method for defeating them -- turning on what is called 'word verification', those little pictures of a series of letters that you are asked to repeat by typing into the little box underneath it (see example at top).

These cut out the spammers because it takes a human to recognize the letters, and the automated 'spambots' cannot 'see' them. Makes an extra step for you to post your comment, but keeps things nicer for us all. Blogger has a longer explanation here.

So, word verification has been turned on as of today. I appreciate your patience with the extra little step, and am sure you will appreciate the lack of spam. Thanks!
