Over one hundred Plainfield young people have been placed in summer job slots through the City's Summer Youth Employment Program, which this summer is being run by consultant Dr. Tressa Brown and Patti Boone of Plainfield Action Services, with the assistance of two interns.
The program, funded through a Community Development Block Grant, has been a staple for local youngsters for over twenty years.
Besides earning a wage, young people learn about an adult work environment, including dealing with workmates, bosses and, occasionally, the public.
Many alumni of the program have moved on to successful careers in public service, some of them in Plainfield.
Plainfield's annual program gets under way as the Ledger's main story today examines the decrease in summer employment among suburban youth aged 16-19, which is now 39.6% -- it's lowest point since data began to be collected in 1948.
The story is based on a study by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, whose director Andrew Sum says, "You learn to work by working."
Couldn't have said it better myself.
