Central Jersey peace activists will gather at Congressman Mike Ferguson's office today in what is billed as a 'Stand By Your Man' event, in response to Ferguson's 'no' vote on HR2956, which calls for withdrawal of US troops from Iraq by April, 2008.
The title is ironic, since those gathering are asking Ferguson NOT to stand by his man, President George W. Bush, and Bush's continuing policies in Iraq.
Rep. Ferguson, who once scored as high as 97% in rankings of his votes in support of Bush initiatives, has attempted to project a more moderate image in recent months, and there have been few mentions of the president. In this distancing from the White House, Ferguson is not alone.
His district was created after the last Census to be non-competitive (Plainfield was taken from it and added to Pallone's district -- an already 'safe' Dem enclave). However, as the war in Iraq has ground on, it has become less and less secure, and Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) gave him a good run for his money last November, losing by a slim margin.
Today's rally is being coordinated by LaDonna Blount, a MoveOn.org volunteer working in the area this summer. She has drawn in much of the peace movement in Central Jersey, including 'South Mountain Peace Action', which coordinates local peace activities.
