Under the heading "40 years later, did the rebellion help us or hurt us?", the Plainfield chapter of the People's Organization for Progress will lead a discussion of the Plainfield 'riot' of 1967 this Saturday.
Guest speakers include longtime local activist Augurs Linward Cathcart and Zayid Muhammad, national minister of culture for the New Black Panther Party.
Newark, which is making a major effort to commemorate the 40th anniversary, pointedly noted that the City of Plainfield, under Mayor Robinson-Briggs' leadership, was NOT planning any official commemoration.
A four-day series in the Star-Ledger and a documentary on the disturbances, "Revolution '67", have done much to show that the overwhelming violence in Newark was that of the National Guard and the State Police against the residents of the city.
One wonders if a similar conclusion could be drawn about Plainfield.
