Canada Geese like this one thrive in Plainfield's parks.
Like me, you may be tired of navigating the droppings from hundreds of Canada Geese who have taken up year-round residence in Plainfield.
Although they seem to be mainly concentrated in the two County parks -- Cedar Brook and Green Brook -- they have been spotted at Milt Campbell Field and Leland Avenue Park.
I was fascinated every year at the NJ League of Cities conference in Atlantic City to see the people lined up at the booth of a company that rented Border Collies to help control the geese. Border Collies -- the ultimate obsessive-compulsives -- are driven to herd, and will endlessly and tirelessly herd the geese until they fly away.
Recently, there have been stories about volunteers coating eggs in the nests of Canada Geese with vegetable oil, rendering them unhatchable without setting off another round of egg-laying by the females, would happen if the eggs were removed or destroyed.
So now comes news of a contraceptive pill for geese.
Sounds like a humane way of controlling this exploding and messy population. [Read more here...]
Just one question: Who gets the concession for supplying those little daily pill reminder boxes to the geese?

There is no need to worry, the Council passed a law on feeding wild animals and published it in the Star Ledger for $1,000's in legal expenses. This will certainly stop those raskells ! [ we all know those geese are smart enough to read and tremble !!] Pity the other towns who do not wisely spend big bucks on legal ads and end up so poorly managed ! Their municipalities taxes must not be as reasonable as Plainfield's !!
