Ya gotta hand it to the Guv. At least he seems to be serious about getting New Jersey's fiscal situation under control.
And in the rational world in which you and I live in, trying to 'monetize' assets such as the Turnpike is a natural direction to look in. At the very least, we know the tolls will be going up.
The GOP wants to make some hay over it all in the current election cycle. But Dunstan McNichol, writing in the Ledger, details similarities between Corzine's plan and language in the 1999 Structured Financing Act -- that is, back in the days when the GOP controlled Drumthwacket AND the Statehouse
Juan Melli, writing on Blue Jersey spreads the word among the faithful that the idea was given a spin.
Eric Sedler, writing on Red Jersey -- takes issue with Melli, basically saying, "So what, it wasn't used."
The ping-pong notwithstanding, Corzine probably has no choice but to press on.
Only thing is the entire Legislature is up at the polls in November.
That deflating sound you hear, as pointed out by Tom Hester, writing for the AP, is the resolve of the Democratic legislators. They're gonna take the Governor's back on this one?
Get serious.
- Ledger: "GOP once favored asset utilization; Backed law similar to Corzine plan in'99"
- Courier - 7/31/2007: "Dem support for Corzine's toll-road plan starts to wane"
- Blue Jersey - "Diane Allen was for leasing the Turnpike before she was against it"
- Red Jersey - "Asset monetization in 1999 has no case in 2007"
