The City of Plainfield, through the Recreation Division under Dave Wynn's leadership, is stepping up to the plate and producing an outdoor festival of art, slated for Saturday, September 8th, at Library Park.
The outdoor festival, begun by the old Plainfield Chamber of Commerce in 1963, became over time a staple on the exhibit circuit of fine artists and photographers in the New York metro area -- attracting artists from as far afield as Brooklyn, New York, and Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Coordinating the event was a yearlong activity of the organizing committee, many of whom were affiliated with the duCret Art School. Months were spent recruiting artists, photographers and craftspersons. Volunteers were recruited to run KidzArt, a children's art corner with art and craft activities as well as face-painting and making balloon figures. Judges were lined up to award the prizes in both professional and non-professional categories for both art and photography.
Food vendors lined College Place, enticing the thousands of attendees with burgers, chicken and the aroma of freshly cooked sausage and peppers.
Clowns entertained, bands supplied music, and hosts of community organizations clustered in their own special corner to tour their activities and recruit members and volunteers.
The Art Festival has always been one of Plainfield's special treats, and we all are in the City's debt for stepping in on such short notice to pull off such a complicated event.
Be sure to spread the word to everyone you know. It's success has always been the fact that it drew thousands from the NY metro area to visit Plainfield.
Let's work to keep up the tradition!
