PLAINFIELD

92-year-old city man killed in 3-car wreck

A 92-year-old resident died Saturday after sustaining injuries that morning in a three-car accident at Berckman Street and East 3rd Street, police said.

Othello Noel was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, said Chief of Police Edward Santiago.

Two other drivers involved in the wreck were both Plainfield residents. One, a 36-year-old man, was treated and released from Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Santiago said. The other, a 50-year-old woman, underwent surgery and is in stable condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, he said.

Two of the three cars, including that driven by Noel, were totaled, police said. The cause of the accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed, Santiago said.

-- Staff report

NOTE: This story explains the email I received early Saturday afternoon about helicopters at Hub-Stine Field. According to my sources, one helicopter even landed before the fire trucks had arrived (which are supposed to be on hand before a landing, in case of fire), and that when the trucks DID arrive, no one had the key to the locked gate on Fayette Place and the padlock had to be removed with a bolt-cutter. -- Dan.
