Muhlenberg Place fire pictures

Smoke can be seen rising in this view from West Third and Muhlenberg Place.

A fire broke out mid-afternoon Sunday at a home on Muhlenberg Place near the intersection with South Second Street.

A pillar of smoke soon towered over the West End, which I spotted coming in East Second Street from Richmond Towers.

By the time I navigated over to South Second Street and Plainfield Avenue, police had the entire area sealed off except for firefighting equipment. Besides Plainfield, trucks were spotted from Berkeley Heights, Summit, Rahway, Springfield and Scotch Plains (there may have been others as well).

Though I was unable to get close to the blaze, which spread to -- and heavily damaged -- two adjacent homes, reader Cheri Bullock was able to get some pictures, which I am happy to post here.

The Red Cross and the Salvation Army were on hand offering assistance to those displaced by the fire. You can read the Courier's coverage here.

Summit and Rahway were among several communities to lend mutual aid.

Operations ended around 8:30 PM.
