Train hits and kills man in Plainfield
A man who wandered onto the tracks was struck and killed by an NJ Transit train in Plainfield early yesterday [Sunday], authorities said.
The train, which was not carrying any passengers and was traveling from Raritan to Newark, hit the man just east of the Plainfield train station about 1:20 a.m., said Courtney Carroll, an NJ Transit spokeswoman.
The man, who was in his 20s, was trespassing, said Carroll, adding the accident location wasn't a designated rail crossing. Investigators are trying to determine the man's identification, she said.
The accident canceled one westbound train and led to a 90-minute delay on another train, which carried about 150 people, Carroll said. Service was later restored.
