Hidden Plainfield: Dump gets makeover

From Dump to Dream House.
Readers complained to me for years about this house, which was an eyesore in its tidy neighborhood, and is today's Hidden Plainfield subject.

It looked like a suburban Ma and Pa Kettle homestead, with junkers in the driveway, a shutter dangling from the side of one window and torn shades in others. Neighbors told me they had complained to code enforcement countless times and that the resident ignored repeated summonses to housing court.

Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride as Ma and Pa Kettle raised their fifteen kids
in the ramshackle farmhouse pictured above in a popular film series of the 1950s.

Eventually the property was foreclosed on and the occupant put out.

Which gave the house, with a new owner, an opportunity for a major makeover that will make it one of the most attractive properties in this leafy block when finished.

Do you know where this property is?

Ahh yes the scary green house on Oakland.

This is just a wild guess, but I would say Prospect Avenue extension. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think it is true to say that when I grew up, that little neighborhood- it almost seemed like a little community on its dead end street bordering Scotch Plains- seemed ma and pa kettle-ish. I better not make another guess lest I insult another neighborhood.

Too easy, Dan. Oakland, and it's the people who hosted the Symphony benefit last night paying for it and the architect who did their house who designed it. It used to be a bilious green, along with all the other horrors inflicted by the people living there.

They ignored the court summonses and kept their own private "sh-t hole" the way it was....ONLY in Plainfield or some other half ass slum. Pathetic.

- Some cities actually use their inspections department for a source of revenue as well as keeping their city clean and neat...Of course, I do know Plainfield is all about the "uneven" sidewalks in RESIDENTIAL areas only...Am I an observer from a slightly removed dimension??? What don't you people get ?? There is seriously something screwed up with Plainfield....WAKE UP. City Council included...don't you, Adrian, Robin, Annie, Cory, find something wrong with someone simply ignoring a court summons regarding zoning and code issues??? THIS WOULDN"T HAPPEN IN WESTFIELD ( although yes, GOD forbid this city look good like Westfield ). Anyone of you 4 feel free to respond....WTF ??? How's that for hidden Plainfield?? OUR code enforcement...
