Tragic loss for Leaty family and for Plainfield

Eduardo Leaty (Family photo).

The senseless shooting death of store owner Eduardo Leaty on Saturday afternoon is a tragic loss for his family and for Plainfield.

By all accounts, Leaty was well-liked and admired by neighbors for keeping the corner where his store was located a safe environment for all who visited the store or the neighborhood.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his mother, Justa, his wife Margie and their girls Justa and Jessica, his brother Ricardo and his sister Marilyn, whom I had the pleasure of working with for many years at City Hall.

In the midst of shock and sorrow for the family's loss, I am sure readers will want to send best wishes for a speedy recovery to his friend and helper, J.M. Benjamin, Sr., who was wounded in the robbery attempt.

Plainfield has suffered not only the loss of a fine citizen, but another tarnishing moment for its reputation as the Queen City.

My deepest condolences to the family and my prayers. It is sad and I don't think a shot detector would have helped.

I didn't know this man but my older siblings remembered him when he had a store on Arlington Avenue. My condolescences to his family.

Plainfield really need to let the state step in and take over because enough is enough.
