Owner of Leaty Grocery was fatally shot during Saturday afternoon robbery. |
An attempted robbery was reported to police around 4:00 PM Saturday afternoon of the corner store at East 6th and Central Streets.
One of the owners was shot in the chest and first responders tried to save him with CPR, but were unsuccessful.
An employee was shot in the arm, perhaps more than once, and an as yet unidentified third person was hit.
The violent robbery comes after a holiday crowd witnessed the 88th Annual Independence Day Parade along East Front Street late in the morning, and the afternoon commencement of the third Latino-sponsored Independence Day fiesta in the city parking lot between the Green Brook and East Front Street, from Park to Watchung Avenues.
UPDATE SATURDAY NIGHT: There are conflicting reports about whether a third person was shot. More as information becomes available.

An average of 1 murder every 3 weeks. The city needs leadership and the mayor and her police director dont know what to do.
Where is the POLICE DEPT MANAGEMENT? There was homes broken into,a store robbed, a MURDER,people running up and down the streets firing their guns, and gang members running the streets LARGE AND IN CHARGE as they say! Hellwig let all the cops work the easy parade job and make overtime, but when it came time to work EAST SIXTH ST were the east end has had alot of problems lately NO protection is ever there! We need to call in the New York Guardian Angles maybe they can show HELWIG HOW TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE CITIZENS OF PLAINFIELD! He does not know whats going on becouse he does not live here and does not want to live here becouse he knows just how bad it really is.
East 6th St Needs the national guard to protect them. Hellwig does nothing to help them . The East 6th St Possie is in control selling guns and drugs in the park and on the corner. The Police car 54 where are you??
HOW COME THE COURIER NEWS (the local newspaper) DID NOT COVER THIS STORY IN EITHER Sundays edition or Mondays edition? I read this clip online and in THE STAR LEDGER THE PAPER OF ALL NEW JERSEY. WHO IS THE COURIER NEWS PROTECTING, THE INEPT SHARON ROBINSON BRIGGS ADMINISTRATION??? WAKE-UP PLAINFIELD!
How come the Courier News did not cover this murder in either Sunday or Monday editions? Read the Star Ledger, the paper for New Jersey! Why does The Courier News continually protect the inept administration of Mayor Sharon Robinson Briggs, and the total Plfd. City Council?
