Hidden Plainfield: Wandering Afield

Today's home is being transformed into a stone-clad mansionette.

I hope you'll bear with me as we go slightly 'afield' today. Although this Hidden Plainfield home is not in Plainfield, it is nearby and I'm sure hundreds of us pass by this house-in-transformation daily.

The side view is likely street you would pass by on;
note the tower and bumped out rear addition.

It is one of several nearly identical late Victorian frame homes in its neighborhood, except that this one is getting an extreme makeover. From frame Victorian to stone-encased mansionette with tile roof and hexagonal add-ons. A neighbor that is quite similar to the original of today's mystery house is shown for contrast.

The original was quite similar to its across-the-corner neighbor,
except I think that it had long ago shed its porch.

Cinderella going to the ball?

Do you know where this home is?

Answer tomorrow.

It's on Watchung in North Plainfield. Notice they have kept a lot of the Victorian extras...the gables, rooflines etc even with the "extreme" makeover ??? In Plaifield this would have HAD to existed in a historic district to retain such respect for the neighborhood and it's history. They almost doubled the size of the house with the addition, which of course, matches the rest of the house. Southwest, not my style of choice for such a large dwelling, but it's being done right, so will turn out ok I imagine.

and...this is the house I mentioned when referring to an "addition" on one of your earlier "Hidden Plainfields" with the addition that didn't go with the house or the neighborhood.

Watchung Ave in No Plfd...I've been watching the progress, they have spared no expense copper gutters and flashings, tile roof, pillars and a small portico in the back/front. Nice!

It looks like a lot of work has been done on this house since I last drove by. It is really coming together. It is at the corner of Watchung Avenue in North Plainfield, but I don't know the name of the cross street.

Not fair - don't want to leave home and drive down Watchung to see what street it's actually on but my best guess is the nw corner of Grandview and Watchung.

Its on Somerset St near rt 22. It is totally out of place and character for the neighborhood. It will be interesting to see when it is finished. It looks like it is lost and should be in Watchung or Warren.

This is someones dream house. Freedom is good. Good that this home owner knew not to buy in an historic district, other wise they could kiss this dream goodbye. Being in an historic district is the same as being in a homeowners association, everything needs approval, there are fees to pay, and ordinances haphazardly imposed. This homeowner is paying taxes, it looks nice...
