73 of 75 Plainfield nonprofits still face losing tax-exempt status

The IRS countdown for Plainfield nonprofits in danger of losing their tax-exempt status for nonfiling of the required 990 forms continues.

With an October 15 deadline, time is growing short for the
one-time relief being offered by the IRS.

Two Plainfield nonprofits were in touch and advised they were catching up on their 990 filings, leaving, as far as I am aware, 73 still in danger of losing their status.

If you see a group you recognize and have a contact, drop them a friendly reminder.

Having to start over again from scratch to get nonprofit status would be a definite bummer.

Dan, I am not sure about why this is a big deal. First, if you are running a business, non-profit or not, shouldn't this be high on your To Do list? It appears that this is sloppy management. If they don't file at the appropriate date, it is their fault. Isn't this part of being responsible?

@ 6:47 -- Two questions for you: Have you ever been responsible for filing a 990 for a nonprofit?

Have you ever gotten a nonprofit registered as tax-exempt with the IRS?

It's a pain in the butt to get registered, and time-consuming. It would be a double pain to lose it and have to start over from scratch.

Small nonprofits that don't meet the financial threshold for ANNUAL reporting are only required to do so once every three years. They get no reminder from the IRS (unlike your car registration, say) when year three is up.

How many once-in-three-year obligations do you have, and how do you keep track of them so you don't mess up?

You put it on your calendar every year so you don't forget. So, if I need to renew July 1, 2013 - I put a reminder on Dec. 31, 2010 that I have to renew in July and transfer that info into the 2011 calendar. I do this until the actual year comes up and then I enter it in the appropriate month during that year's calendar. It is not hard.

I am amazed at the excuses non corporate organizations make. It is no wonder. So make the excuse instead of figuring it out and lost the status. That's better?

@ 9:25 -- Mayve there's a business opportunity for you here, to volunteer to file 990s for small nonprofits that don't have business types on their boards.

Now, if I just find someone to volunteer marketing talent so I don't get info two days before the event to be publicized.....

Keepin' on dreamin'.....
