Plainfield Garden Club hosts statewide meeting

Plainfield's Garden Club, founded in 1915 and keepers of the Shakespeare Garden for 85 years, is proud to be hosting a statewide meeting of New Jersey Garden Clubs on Wednesday and Thursday.

Susan Fraser, the club's communications chairperson (and keeper of the fabulous web archives of club memorabilia (see the website here), sent me the following email --

[The Plainfield Garden Club is] hosting the biennial meeting of all the twelve Garden Club of America's New Jersey member clubs this week, May 9th and May 10th.

The twelve clubs are as follows:

• Garden Club of Englewood
• Morristown Garden Club
• Short Hills Garden Club
• Rumson Garden Club
• Garden Club of Somerset Hills
• Stony Brook Garden Club
• Garden Club of Madison
• Garden Club of Princeton
• Garden Club of Trenton
• Garden Club of the Oranges
• Plainfield Garden Club

Each club will be sending its President and an appointed Delegate to the meeting.  There will also be a large representation of the Executive Board of the Garden Club of America with officers traveling from Boston and Atlanta.

Highlighting the two day event is a tour of the Shakespeare Garden in Cedar Brook Park, Plainfield, on Wednesday, May 9th at 3 PM.

The Shakespeare Garden, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was designed by the Olmsted Brothers and installed in 1927.  The Plainfield Garden Club has tended and preserved the garden, unbroken, for the last 85 years.  It features plants mentioned within the works of Shakespeare as well as the original 1927 plantings from the Olmsted firm.

Plainfield Garden Club was founded in 1915 and holds spot #54 on the State of New Jersey's Women's Heritage Trail, so great the contribution of our members to the environment and State history.

This is the third time the Plainfield Garden Club has hosted this event. The first occasion took place in 1970 and is documented on our website under "History" in the 1970 file (see here).

If you have never visited the Shakespeare Garden in Cedar Brook Park, you owe it to yourself to stop by and see the many displays -- all of plants, herbs and flowers mentioned throughout the works of Shakespeare.

Susan says the garden will be at it optimum viewing conditions over the next week or two. And bring along your camera!
