Tonight's meeting on schools turns up heat on BOE races

Empty Board of Ed table in January.

Plainfield's school board race will have a little heat applied tonight by way of the community meeting on the schools being organized by fellow blogger, announced school board candidate and former PEP president Renata Hernandez.

Renata has posted the agenda for tonight's meeting
(see here).

The meeting is broken into brief segments (mostly ten minutes) covering the purpose of the Board of Ed, leadership, Robert's Rules of Order, the BOE election process, and 'privilege of the floor'. Two segments will also touch on an employee's perspective on the BOE and 'the power of 5' (votes needed to control decision-making).

I have already received comments complaining that this is a 'campaign event'.

Here's the deal -- while the meeting includes already-announced BOE candidates (Hernandez, Danielle Fletcher, Rasheed Abdul-Haqq, and current BOE member Wilma Campbell), it is not technically a campaign event, since candidate filings for the Board of Ed close on Monday, March 1, after which I will consider us to be in 'campaign season' (see the County Clerk's election calendar here).

As far as my community blog CLIPS is concerned, this will mean that from the March 1 filing date to the BOE election date (Tuesday, April 20), CLIPS will treat any candidate's blogs and events as campaign-related and they will be designated as such in the interest of fairness to all.

Meanwhile, all voters are urged to inform themselves in advance of the school board elections. Coming out for tonight's meeting would be a good place to start, as well as attending Board of Ed meetings (see schedule here).

Hey Dan -- the other coordinators for this event and equally involved and responsible for pulling it together include Keisha Edwards,Rasheed Abdul-Haqq, Danielle Fletcher, and current BOE member Wilma Campbell as well as my Church Family. The Courier News did not capture it as I shared.

Renata -- Not only did the Courier not capture it as you sent it, they never put it online at all -- at least as of this moment, whichh is getting kind of late for them to help get the word out....

Dan: The Plainfield League of Voters will hold a straight-down-the-line forum for BOE candidates with a trained out-of-town moderator on Wed, 14 April. Check the League website. www.lwvplainfield.org. The LWV will also be distributing bios and position statements on all candidates. Pat

Dan,

This is a political event being masked as a community meeting. Ms. Hernandez even stated that the Superintendent might be asked to leave if he attend. How can this be a community meeting on schools and the superintendent be asked to leave?

If that becomes the case this meeting will be just another political hoax.

Will you be twittering from the event this evening Dan?
