Changes to MyCentralJersey's online stories

Plainfield readers of the Courier News' online site, mycentraljersey.com, will notice a new routine for filing stories beginning Monday.

Readers of the CLIPS blog will have noticed that sometimes no link can be supplied to stories from the print edition, either because they have not been posted as of the time CLIPS closes, or because -- in some cases -- they are not posted online at all.

As explained to me by the Courier's Plainfield beat reporter Mark Spivey Monday evening at the Council's agenda-setting session, reporters now get to file a preliminary story online directly, which will then be updated as the story develops.

Two such stories are online at the moment, written in advance of the actual event -- one on last evening's Council agenda (see here), and one on Council and Administration support for Police Director Martin Hellwig (see here).

Because many of Plainfield's evening meetings and activities last long past the Courier's filing deadline, delivery to a news-hungry audience of readers in the print edition of the newspaper has often been delayed by a day -- for instance, a Monday Board of Ed meeting that lasts late into the evening not appearing in print until the Wednesday morning edition.

This new routine will offer the news in a more timely fashion.

After the event noted, reporters will file an updated story, which should appear at the same online link later in the day. Readers may already have noticed that some stories are updated throughout the day and appear with the prefix 'UPDATE: ...etc'.

This is a great step by the Courier's editors in this day of constantly updating news and websites.

Readers, to take full advantage, will need to develop the habit of checking back periodically for the updates.

Plainfield readers should keep an eye on the new process and share thanks, comments and feedback with the Courier's editorial team (see contact info here).
