July 4th Celebration: Should something go?

The matter of Plainfield's July 4th celebrations came up again at Monday's Council session.

Does Plainfield have to lose yet one more sign of its proud past?

Seems to me that in tough times, those in charge should be looking at how to get the most bang for the buck.

Stretching the money thinner and thinner to cover all the various components doesn't make sense to me.

Why not take a cold hard look at the three separate activities -- the morning parade, the concert and the fireworks -- and decide whether one or more of them ought to go?

The only reason that the 'Central Jersey July 4th Parade' seems not to be more 'central Jersey' is that Plainfield doesn't organize it that way -- at least not under the Robinson-Briggs administration.

Each year it gets limper and limper.

There are hardly any of the attractions that used to draw thousands upon thousands -- multiple marching bands whose music and razzmatazz marching stirred the crowds. Or the Shriners with their wacky miniature cars zigzagging down the parade route. Or tapping into our sense of patriotism -- is this not a great country, warts and all?

While some think the parade wouldn't be missed, I'm not so sure.

And I'm not so sure we would be better off without it.

Maybe we could do without the concert and use the money saved to beef up the parade and the fireworks?
