JFK waging email campaign over Muhlenberg zoning?

Muhlenberg's service area.

Plainfield City Council members have begun receiving emails from individuals identifying themselves as employees of JFK and urging the passage of a 'JFK-Muhlenberg ordinance' at the Council's October 15 business meeting.

Here is the text of one of the emails --

Subject: Please Support An Ordinance To Rezone Muhlenberg on October 15
Dear Council [member],

As an employee of JFK Health System and a resident of North Plainfield, I am writing to request the Plainfield City Council review and pass the rezoning ordinance presented to you for the JFK-Muhlenberg campus at your Council meeting on October 15, 2013.

JFK wants to transform Muhlenberg into a mixed use campus of healthcare, education, luxury living and retail stores.  I support the rezoning of the campus and I believe the JFK-Muhlenberg proposal is critical to our community for many reasons:
-We need access to emergency and outpatient healthcare in Plainfield and North Plainfield. My friends and family would like to continue using the satellite emergency room for healthcare emergencies along with the 18,000 people who use it every year.   JFK's proposal provides a new state of the art emergency room and outpatient center that will serve my family and our community;
-Some of my neighbors need jobs now, and our community needs the economic development the JFK proposal will deliver;
-I enjoy living in North Plainfield, and I am often in Plainfield, utilizing the stores, facilities, etc.  JFK's proposal will bring in more tax dollars to support public safety.

I believe it is important that the City Council review and pass the JFK-Muhlenberg ordinance on October 15, 2013.
There is something quite suspicious about this email.

It is, if you will excuse my saying so, a little too 'perfect'.

The progression of the message -- placing the 'writer' in context, stating the action requested, adding points in support of the 'writer's' position, and calling again for action by the recipient before closing -- all bear the marks of an outline prepared by a Public Relations professional.

The dead giveaway is the phrase 'and I am often in Plainfield, utilizing the stores, facilities, etc.' Who talks this way? This is PRspeak, out and out.

One has to wonder what these people are smoking!

Whatever it is, they are becoming more clumsy and hamhanded with each maneuver.

Tonight, the City Council will take up a proposal to hire a consultant to study potential uses for the Muhlenberg campus.

To be credible, such a study will have to include reviewing how other hospitals have been revived and/or repurposed over the past year or two in New Jersey.

With that proviso, I hope the Council moves ahead on the proposal this evening -- meaning that it would be adopted at the October 15 meeting.

Meanwhile, JFK should detox before making any further suggestions.

HALIRIOUS!! An email from a person that lives in North Plainfield and work in Edision. Excatly what stake do they have in my residental Plainfield neighborhood or in Plainfield at all. Send an email when they propose something similar in your North Plainfield neighborhood.

TO JFK and all those in favor of it. HOW MANY WAYS AND HOW MANY TIME CAN WE TELL YOU WE DON’T WANT IT. JFK IF YOU WERE SO CONCERNED ABOUT PLAINFIEL AND IT’S RESIDENTS YOU WOULD HAVE NEVER CLOSED THE HOSPITAL AND OUR POLITCIANS WOULD NEVER HAVE ALLOWED IT. NO MEANS NO!!

I hope the Council take into consideration the residents of Plainfield and not those that work for JFK and most likely do not live in PLFD and will not have to deal with the results of this 600 unit section 8 apt complex and extra tax burden on the PLFD Citizens. There are enough apt complexes that are not be cared for and quickly turning in slums.

How about building a state of the art full service medical facility. A facility that offers ambulatory care, including diagnostic radiology, health education programs, hospital pre-admission, a blood draw station, nuclear medicine, a nutrition center, possible, a one-day surgery center, cancer services including radiation oncology, and an emergency room that is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The site could also include a cluster of condominiums for assistant living. The demographics in the surrounding area will support the successful sale/rental of such condominiums. In my opinion this would be a perfect use for this property. Now I understand this may not be as profitable to JFK as cutting a deal to build a 600 unit apartment building, however, it does appear to be the best use for this property.

Here’s some food for thought, as a realtor whenever a customer sells a property they don’t usually care what happens to it after the sale. I find it so interesting that JFK claims to not have had any other interested parties for the purchase of this property, but has taken such a die-hard stand on selling it to a developer who wants to build 600 units. This plan of theirs is all about the money and has nothing to do with what’s best for Plainfield. A lot of pockets will be lined with this deal if successful.

JFK and others, NO MEANS NO. YOU DON’T OWN OR CONTROL PLAINFIELD AND IT’S STAKEHOLDERS.

So happy that this employee of JFK supports the rezoning of an area in a municipality in which he or she does not live.

of course its PRspeak, and the letter was prepared and handed out to employees at a staff meeting or something. The subject was discussed and then the letters passed around and the staff urged to send them the the counsel, also they would be counseled to change the wording some so that it sounds individual. Its a no brainer!

of course its pr speak, the letters were given to staff to sign and send to counsel members, to "flood them with concerned citizens" effort. Also maybe some will have different order of words so that they are not all the same

Infuriating! I, too, am often in Plainfield taking advantage of shopping, transportation and amenities. I would also like to see continued medical services on the Muhlenberg site. In fact, I have lived with WALKING distance of the Muhlenberg campus for the last 26 years. What don't I want? High-density "luxury" apartments that will be difficult to rent to "luxury" tenants and will put a strain on municipal resources, and are out of place for my neighborhood.

Maybe the E-Mailer from North Plainfield should invite JFK TO BUILD 600 UNITS IN HER NEIGHBORHOOD.

After all is said and done, the powers that be at the all powerful JFK Medical Center will do exactly what they want, when they want. I feel the merger went exactly as they planned. 10 years to take away every service that made money for MH and then little by little bleed every thing else. Low and Behold, exactly 10 years later...Plan accomplished. Now see, in a few years according to a "plan" new houseing will be there regardless of what people want or need!
