Good news, bad news on Plainfield storm relief

If only it were this simple...

Three good news/bad news stories on storm relief in Plainfield.

The first good news is that the Red Cross will be providing emergency assistance and disaster relief today from 11 AM - 6 PM at three locations --

  • DPW Yard, 746 South Avenue
  • Engine 3 Fire Station, West 3rd and Bergen Street
  • PMUA, Cottage Place and Richmond Street
The bad news, sadly, is that I had a report yesterday that some city employees were helping themselves to the Red Cross supplies in advance of distribution to the public.

In another good news story, a new doctor serving the community gathered blankets to donate for those using city shelters. Contacting the Emergency Management Coordinator, the donor was told to take them to the shelter at Washington School. The bad news: The shelter at the school had been closed; the OEM did not ask to keep the blankets to stockpile against a future emergency.

Lastly, I am told that the employees of a large quasi-governmental agency were sent to the home of its executive director -- after the storm had knocked power out -- to install a generator. Puts me in mind of two other storm related stories: in New York State, Gov. Andrew Cuomo fired the state's emergency management chief for misusing workers during the storm (see story here), and in Sussex County, New Jersey, where charges are being mulled against an undersheriff who had a county-owned generator at his home (see story here).

I suppose the news concerning Plainfield is that nothing will come of this incident.

Which is either good news or bad news, depending on your sitz im leben.

Executive Directors using public employees for personal reasons. Probably more typical than the exception to the rule. I wonder how much abuse of office goes on here and when this do-nothing City Council will put a stop to it? Probably never, not with Tracey Brown and the rest of the gang of abusers calling the shots. Are your pockets ready for the picking?

You can be pretty sure that Shady Sharonda will not do much as she has shown in the past. Dave Winn and Hellwig should have lost their jobs for their mistakes, but Sharon did little or nothing. Welcome to Plainfield.

Yes, I heard the story about the head of that "quasi government agency" from neighbors... Let's just say it was the head of our beloved PMUA who arranged for the personal perk of having the generator installed while his neighbors sat in the dark and cold for days and days.

And lets not forget that City Hall did a piss-poor job of communicating with residents...about anything. Unless maybe your family members work for the city.

And speaking of family connections, I also hear the person in charge of the citys emergency mismanagement is related to Assemblyman Green.

And...where was the mayor? MIA. And defensive about it.

You are talking about Dan Williamson the PMUA Executive Director. This should get him fired. Governor Christie is coming to Plainfield.

The fact that city employees helped themselves to freebies before providing it to those for whom it was intended is not news, it's status quo and Robinson-Brigss et. al leads the pack.

It's a vicious cycle of greed and self-entitlement very typical in certain Plainfield circles.

    Sad, so sad.

Dan, I did not see in the local paper about the Red Cross comming to Plainfield. Is The OEM keeping the Red Cross for Friend's & Famiy ONLY ? I have been waiting for the City to publish or send out flyers informing the block associations of help being made available to the average citizen (not just the ones in the Mayors family circle of citizens)as to when help was finally going to come to Plainfield. The OEM of Plainfield failed at his job and should be fired! FEMA and the Red cross was not here when people most needed them. Shame on Helwig and the Oem manager for letting the citizens down.

Dan: any guesses on the "large, semi-governmental agency" in question?
