News to share about the Garden
The Shakespeare Garden at Cedar Brook Park is 80 this year, and on Saturday June 2 visitors will get a guided tour through this gem at its peak viewing moment, courtesy of volunteers from the Plainfield Garden Club, which has maintained the garden since its inception.
Hundreds of specimens of flowers, herbs and shrubs mentioned in the works of Shakespeare will be on display, marked with identifying nameplates.
A climbing rose grown from a cutting from the Ann Hathaway cottage in Stratford-on-Avon will grace a traditional dovecote. An armillary commands attention at the center of a knot garden.
Plainfield's Shakespeare Garden is one of fewer than one hundred such throughout the world, survivors of a wave of such gardens inspired in the early part of the last century by celebrations of the Bard's 350th birthday.
The sights and smells of the garden will be complemented by complimentary refreshments, a boutique and plant sale and music by members of the Plainfield Symphony.
An additional paid tour will show off three outstanding and contrasting private gardens of Queen City residents.
Funds raised by the private tour and sales at the garden will go toward maintenance of the garden as a public treasure.
