Christie Whitman was on the hot seat yesterday over her handling of the message on air quality in lower Manhattan in the days and weeks following 9/11.
But Tom Moran lodged the most serious complaint of all -- that Whitman was a wimp for not protesting White House happy-face rewrites of her agency's press releases.
I knew Christie Whitman as governor. She visited Plainfield several times (Corzine has not), to promote her urban programs or announce grants to the City. She has always seemed a decent and competent person to me, but she bit off more than she could chew taking on the EPA assignment.
It became clear after the White House pulled the rug out from under her on a couple of occasions that she was just window-dressing for an Administration with other things on its mind, other priorities.
So, Rove et al rewrote her press releases.
Another instance of White House criminality?
What do you think?
