Continuing its long-term program of rehabilitation of its bridges in Plainfield, NJT has begun work on the Madison Avenue and Liberty Street bridges as of June 13.
The two streets will be closed to vehicular traffic for the duration. A passage for pedestrian traffic will be available after work hours.
In contrast to previous work, where some streets were shut down for a year at a time, the work being currently undertaken will take place in phases. The Madison/Liberty phase will go through Fall 2007.
At that time, Madison and Liberty will be reopened and work will begin on Central Avenue and New Street from Fall 2007 through Spring of 2008. When that phase is finished, work will restart on the Madison/Liberty bridges.
The projects will alternate until all are completed in the Spring of 2009.
I think this will prove a much better solution in the long haul, even though rush hour traffic on West Second Street has already become execrable. The Police Division has been asked to look into posting an officer at Second and Madison to cut the Madison Avenue drivers some slack (Second Street traffic will not let them in).
Vehicle clearance distances will be improved, as well as diversion of water drainoff so that it will not spill directly into the streets.
NJT notes that historical features of the bridges will be preserved and their appearance improved (that's where the paint comes in!).
I am told the 'historical features' include retaining Jersey Central RR logos.
