Mapp team consolidates City leadership; Board of Ed challenges lie ahead

Success came to the Mapp team on Election Day.

With a commanding 79% of the total vote, incumbent Adrian O. Mapp defeated independent challenger Mustapha Muhammad for the Plainfield mayor's race. Unofficial tallies are 5,364 for Mapp and 1,415 for Muhammad.

Mapp's running mates were unopposed. Joylette Mills-Ransome won the Wards 2/3 at-large seat with a tally of 3,553. Ward 4 candidate Steve Hockaday took his seat with 800 votes. All tallies are unofficial.

This victory gives Mapp unstoppable support on the City Council with a reliable six-vote majority.

Progress on the Board of Education is less clear.

Only one of the school board candidates endorsed by the Mapp team was successful: Dr. Avania Richardson-Miller, who came in third with a total of 1,369 votes. She will be joined on the board by two candidates supported by the Campbell faction: Cameron E. Cox and Terence J. Johnson.

All election results are unofficial until certified by Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi.

The mayor and Council terms begin January 1, 2018, as do the newly elected school board members.
