Lady Liberty, with New Jersey behind her. |
Does New Jersey live up to Lady Liberty's ideals? Plainfield Today readers have an unprecedented opportunity to help answer that question.
NJ Spotlight, the website dedicated to in-depth analysis of policy issues facing New Jersey, is in the final push of a crowdfunding campaign to underwrite a year-long study of the experience of immigrants in the Garden State.
New Jersey has always been a starting point for immigrants, and there are almost 2 million foreign-born residents to prove the point. The Garden State is home to more than 300,000 from the Caribbean, 95,000 Africans, 300,000 South Americans, 250,000 South Asians, and 90,000 Chinese. And that's just for starters.
A pledge to the NJ Spotlight campaign will empower our friends at this website to take a year-long in-depth look at immigrants and their successes and challenges in making their way in the Garden State.
Immigration is a hot issue in this year's presidential campaigning. Wouldn't you like to have some fact-based information about the situation on the ground in New Jersey? It would help counteract the hateful rhetoric of the likes of Donald Trump.
The campaign is in the final stretch. NJ Spotlight must finish raising $30,000 by 7:30 PM on Tuesday evening -- or it will not receive any funding at all.
Every contribution is tax-deductible and every contribution will be matched -- meaning your gift of $100 will bring $200 in funding into the project.
You can listen to managing editor (and Plainfield resident) Lee Keough and reporter John Mooney making their pitch on WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show last Friday (see here).
