Four options for budget-strapped towns like Plainfield

Paterson's Joey Torres has an idea: Cut!

With a final budget not yet on the horizon and only three-plus months to go, the Robinson-Briggs administration might want to take a page from Joey Torres' playbook.

That's Joey Torres, mayor of Paterson, which is facing a $3 million shortfall in state aid.

In today's Bergen Record (see story here), Torres lists four options facing the city -- and, by extension, other cities such as Plainfield that are similarly situated:
  1. A furlough plan (expected to save $2 million for Paterson in the remaining 3 months of the fiscal year)
  2. A salary deferral plan
  3. Freezing overtime
  4. Reducing operating expenses
So far, the Robinson-Briggs administration has come up only with a layoff plan for one.

Welcome to the Queen City.

Seems to me that I have been advocating the first two and parts of the others for months in my blog and at Council meetings. To date there has been no movement in any direction that would indicate Administration is aware of a financial crisis.

I she REALLY wants to save $$, cancel the July 4th parade!! The Police, fire & city hall staff get paid Over/DOUBLE time to work & RIDE in it. Everyone could have a nice picnic in their neighborhoods and go to Summit for fireworks paid for by the drug companies in that town. Just thinking .....

As much as I hate saying it, but yes, I agree with Anonymous ahead of me - Cancel the 4th of July Fireworks and parade. Sorry, the $ isn't there. Since the election is coming up for Mayor Jerry, err, Mayor Sharn, we KNOW that the thought of laying off people ( more than likely the best way to trim the fat ) will not happen as angering the Union woul likely mean Mayor Jerry & Mayor Sharon would face a backlash. If only our Mayors would both put as much effort into cleaning up, streamlining and improving the city of PLainfield as they do trying to play CYA they might actually improve their image & the city. C'est la vie..
