About leaf and brush pickups

I've
had several emails inquiring about the city's leaf pickup schedule and noticed some folks have already started bagging their leaves and putting them curbside.

Plainfield's Spring brush and leaf pickup schedule should be in your mailbox shortly, according to Superintendent of Public Works John Louise, who I saw at Mayor Robinson-Briggs' forum on Tuesday evening.

Will Mayor Sharon have it put online?

For that, you will have to check with her communications staff.

I am so confused by this whole process. All the handouts / literature they have about this states sticks and wood must be a certain length and bundled up. For many seasons around Plainfield I see piles of brush and leaves laying on the street. I would LOVE to take the easy way out and NOT bundle up all the brush and sticks I have if it's ok. I just don't want to be the household they make an example out of with a ticket & fine.

Would this be the brush and leaf pickup that PMUA bills residents $21 per month in their shared services fee? Is this the vegetative waste that was included as part of the $1.2 million payment from the City of Plainfield to PMUA? Are Plainfield residents being fleeced? Only in Plainfield. we need CHANGE!

Also...per what has been being said and Anonymous's comment about the PMUA as a whole. I can't say without a doubt that I believe the PMUA is the 100% BEST plan that is on the table. I do truly believe that it's better run than the city or county governments. I am never going to be a fan of any "AUTHORITY" as they are, especially in NJ & NY State where they are usually used as a patronage dumping ground. But, unless somehow, someway I can see how the city can run the system better, I am not sure I would favor getting rid of it. In rare cases does a government entity do a better job. I don't like the fees, and I don't like the recent increases. I have a hard time believing it would be more cost effective if being run by the City of Plainfield. A dialogue with all parties involved would be nice and maybe cost savings could be found. The issue of a dialogue of course is foreign to her "HONOR" and her string puller so I would hope they wouldn't be involved.

I may be mistaken, however, i have never seen PMUA pickup brush and leaves. It has only ever been the DPW and their yellow trucks. So i am quite confused about the $21 per month and wonder if that fee goes to the city?

To 6:09 PM --

You're right. You never saw PMUA trucks pick up residential leaves or brush.

Rob, since you asked for a plan here it is. I was in no way advocating that the City take it over. Too much government in this only compounds the problem and the $$$'s. The PMUA was supposed to be both affordable and responsible. Apparently greed has taken over and they are now neither. They could go back to doing what their original charter stated or should get out of the business.

PMUA would continue to "get" the $1.2 million per year from the city for downtown, vegetative waste, and public area cleanup. Residents who wanted to pay the near double for weekly garbage and recycling to PMUA could continue to do so or choose a more competitive provider. This alone would save residents nearly $400 EACH a year. This would probably mean that some PMUA staff would be let go but for an already overstaffed company it might not be bad to:

* Let supervisors go whose sole role is to "follow" to make sure people are working.
* Pay someone to take pictures of an extra bag or slightly open lid.
* Stop producing 8 page color newsletters
* Get rid of high level executives

With the size of the PMUA operation, they should be the most cost effective game in town. But bad management and a board who hasn't a clue have turned it into a profit for some while showing a deficit to those whom they service. What a scam and racket! Maybe the AG will get involved in this one like they did with Verizon. One can only wish.

Wow..Ok to 9:18 post: Yes, I especially agree with the "brochures" we receive highlighting of all things " Susy Q " and her favorite color, favorite day of the week, her hobbies and how long she has worked for the PMUA. I am in printing and I can tell you -- that little thing is NOT cheap by any means. And I will say this, I am MORE than willing to listen to all the ideas regarding the PMUA unlike are fair leaders -- MAYORS Jerry & Sharon. Thank you for the extra information...it's very appreciated. Now..anyone with info on brush ??? Loose, bundled ?? What?? I know on Central Avenue an in front of some of the more prestigious homes it's definitely a huge loose bundle of brush, the information always says "bundled and no more than 2-3 ft long "...anyone ? anyone???
