Plainfield holiday activities continue Monday with an opportunity for you to be an angel for the Holidays.
The YWCA continues it celebration of 100 years of service to Plainfield and the surrounding communities with the annual Hanging of the Greens festivities on Monday evening. The YWCA's holiday tree will be decorated with angels signifying contributions to the agency's preschool and after-school programs. Your angel can be there.
The annual event harks back to the days when single women lived at the YWCA, and gathered together to decorate the striking 2-story octagonal reception area with greens, a tree and ornaments, according to Executive Director Jackie Glock.
Several years ago, I had the honor of meeting one of those 'YW girls' who met her husband -- then the organist at Grace Episcopal Church -- while she was living in the facility in 1944, during WWII. They had returned to Plainfield to celebrate the couple's 50th anniversary by renewing their vows at the church.
Though the YWCA no longer serves to house young working women, the tradition of hanging the greens has continued as an opportunity for supporters of the organization to make a contribution and to socialize.
The Hanging of the Greens reception will be held at 7 PM, Monday, December 10 and is free and open to the public.
