Plainfield's First Ward Councilor Diane Toliver and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump share the initials "D" and "T". But do they share more than that? I hope not.
The only thing that seems to have marred Saturday's large and lively 92nd Annual July 4 Parade was an incident triggered by Councilor Toliver.
Trump has been in the doghouse since portraying Mexican immigrants in comments last week as bringing drugs into this country and being rapists (see here).
Blowback over Trump's remarks has already cost 'The Donald' several lucrative business deals, including the Spanish-language network Univision (which broadcast two of his beauty pageants), Macy's (which yanked a clothing line), NASCAR and ESPN (which relocated a golf tournament as a result).
Latinos at the pre-parade breakfast reported that Toliver had the magnetized signs identifying parade dignitaries' cars switched so that Toliver got the vehicle designated by parade organizers for Grand Marshal Flor Gonzalez for herself, leaving Gonzalez the car that Toliver did not want to ride in.
The cars were vintage automobiles supplied through arrangements made by Council President Bridget Rivers.
I am told that Toliver did not ask Gonzalez if she minded the switch, but simply commandeered the car in question.
Was she simply throwing her weight around? Or was she sending some sort of signal to the Latino community? If it was the latter, she should reflect carefully on the fact that her Ward has the preponderance of Latinos registered to vote.
Which reminds me -- Toliver is sponsoring a Family Fun Day slated for this Saturday at Milt Campbell Field, targeted to residents of the First Ward. I have not seen any flyers in Spanish inviting Latinos to the event.
