New police off-duty pay ordinance passes

Sign notes construction on East 2nd Street from 7 AM - 5 PM.
That will become $75/hour for two cops (at Park and Watchung Avenues)
10 hours per day, 5 days per week when new ordinance takes effect.
Plainfield City Council unanimously passed nine ordinances Monday evening -- a record at one time methinks -- including one setting new hourly fee schedules for police at off-duty private or quasi-public functions.

Six of the ordinances covered contract settlements with the city's public employee unions. Two others covered registration and property maintenance requirements and violation fees for abandoned, vacant and foreclosed properties.

The new off-duty fee for police to protect public utility crews working in the streets is $75/hour, with a $7.50/hour administrative fee tacked on which goes to the city for administering the off-duty assignments. Can you understand why these assignments are popular among the police?

While I fine it absurd that someone gets that much money for standing around with their hands in their pocket watching guys dig a whole, it is even more absurd that the City charges $7.50 and hour for an administrative fee to maintain time records and on top of that, have time records falsified by those that get paid to maintain them.

Even more important - does anyone monitor how many hours a police officer works on these off duty hours and then comes to work their regular shift after being up for so many hours?
