The promise Jon Corzine showed in 2005 has proven illusory.
(Shown here in 2005 with Mayor Al McWilliams and Councilor Rashid Burney.)
Jon Corzine must do better as governor the second time around.
And thoughtful Plainfielders must put aside their anger and disappointment with him in order to maximize the chances that things will ever get better for our community.
There is no denying that by failing to implement his own standards on 'rationalizing' New Jersey's hospital situation, the closure of Muhlenberg Hospital -- with the deterioration of healthcare services delivery it has brought and the economic hardship wrought on the community by the loss of 1,100 jobs -- is a blot on Corzine's reputation that can only be healed by the hospital's restoration, if at all.
Assemblyman Jerry Green and Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs proved lacking in both vision and leadership by coming too late and with too little gumption to the struggle to save Muhlenberg.
There is also no denying that the dismantling of the Abbott v. Burke decision is going to cost Plainfield taxpayers severely over the long haul. The crux of the Abbott settlement was that the Supreme Court put an obligation on the state to ensure that students in the 'Abbott' districts received a 'thorough and efficient' education as guaranteed by the State constitution, and provide the financial resources necessary.
While there is a three-year review period for the new funding scheme, no one was predicting the severe recession the country is passing through and it does not seem realistic to assume the new formula will be overturned -- or that any extra aid for the Abbott districts (including Plainfield) will be available beyond the review period.
This means that Plainfield taxpayers will be faced with an increased burden for the schools. It is worth remembering that Assemblyman Jerry Green cast the deciding vote in the Assembly for this new funding formula.
So, Plainfielders have much to be angry and disappointed about with Gov. Jon Corzine.
What are the options?
Some folks think that Chris Daggett offers a breath of fresh air as an outsider. Others think that Chris Christie's tough stance on public corruption means that he will clean the muck from Trenton's Augean stables.
Given that Democrats are not going to lose control of the Assembly, all of whose seats are up for election Tuesday, GOVERNING with a Democratic legislature is a key consideration.
For anything useful and beneficial to get done, we will need Corzine in the governor's office.
But there is another, and I think more important, reason Corzine must be re-elected.
Nationally, Republicans are viewing the two governors' races this year -- New Jersey and Virginia -- as a proving ground for whether President Obama's initiatives can be derailed, the GOP hand strengthened in advance of the 2010 midterm elections, and Obama effectively rendered a lame duck before the end of his first year in office.
For those who believed in Barack Obama and voted for him last year, this is a decisive moment.
If Jon Corzine loses in New Jersey, Barack Obama will be wounded and the ability of his administration to deliver on key fronts such as healthcare reform and leading the country out of the deepest recession since the Great Depression will be severely compromised.
For this reason, I think Plainfielders must put aside their anger and disappointment in his lackluster performance and cast their vote for Jon Corzine and his running mate, Sen. Loretta Weinberg, who will become New Jersey's first lieutenant governor.
Corzine must do better in a second term. He must show some spine and take on the issues of tackling the nation's highest property tax burden and cleaning up the worst public corruption anywhere in the country.
If he does not, he will fail not just Plainfield, but President Obama, New Jersey and the entire country.

Here is the first sad fact:
1) Corzine will NOT do better in the 2nd term as he truly believes he has gone above and beyond what he promised...delusional thinking at best. Was refreshing to see the Courier News stood up and said he had to go. Corzine won't stand up to the party bosses, the unions, the legislatures or special interests. He is in fact the Chaplain on a pirate ship. Useless.
2) Seeing the Courier News acknowledge Mayor Jerry & Stender the Spender MUST go was a pleasant shock. For they too are part of the problem and see nothing wrong with what they do or don't do.
3)Seeing the Courier News sum up Assistant Mayor Sharon as ineffective, bungling and an uncoordinated ineffective leader and then say there was little alternative... Shameful on that paper.
GRIP: Get Rid of Incumbent Politicians
Corzine: OUT
Mayor Jerry: OUT
Stender the Spender: OUT
Assistant Mayor Sharon: OUT

Hi Dan, I don't believe for a minute that voting against Corzine will hurt Obama. Our president has much going for him that our Governor does not. Obama works with people, but still has his principles.
Corzine caved to the Unions, caved on the Muhlenburg issue and caved in on reducing taxes. A vote against Corzine is not a vote against Obama. A vote against Corzine means that NJ is fed up with those people in power who do nothing to help those who pay their salaries. A vote against Corzine is a vote FOR change, which is exactly why Obama is in office.
Drinking the Kool-Aid as well Dan? Corzine is a miserable failure and must go. Corzine brings nothing to the national level so a vote for Corzine is not a vote for the President.
I frankly don't think that any of the canidates to be the governor of NJ have the skills/ will and "testicular fortitude" to address the problems that face NJ. The only thing that forces me to hold my nose and vote for Corzine is the fact that the GOP is ready to pounce on President Obama if Corzine looses in NJ. Yes, I care more about how a Corzine lose might potentially provide negative "fodder" for the President than thinking that Corzine is going to do any better in the future than he has done in the past. A person's past actions are a good barometer as to that person's future actions. The other parts of the ticket are a different matter.

Dan,
You may be correct. But your reasoning in support of JC assumes that he will do better and that to vote him out of office would be a sign of disapproval of the President. That thinking assumes that people will not or can not distiunguish the performace of John Corizine from the performance of Barock OBama. John Corizine has been a disapointment because he has failed us. Failure means he does not deserve reelection. However, the election of another does not assure that there will be change or improvement, but it sends a clear message, if you let us down, we vote you of office. That is the power of the vote. Until we think this way, identity politics will prevail. And we wonder why nothing changes on the political landscape. Lastly, you could make the same case for the re-election of JG & SB, and wouldn't that be a mistake??
I agree with Bill Hetfield's comments wholeheartedly. Well thought out.
Dan,
You make my eyelashes hurt. Do you need a vacation? We HAVE to vote for that fool? Rob has it right, why should he change? He will take a reelection as proof that he is one swell leader.
Sandy
PS I don't know who Rob is, but I admire his thinking and logic. Yours this time... not so much.
Dan I was really disappointed in your case for a second Corzine term. You always seem the voice of reason and really can't fathom why you think this would be within the best interests of NJ or Plainfield. I don't buy the Obama connection either. Change is needed across the board.
Heard Jerry Green put you up to this. Corslime is a looser.
Dan..and all your readers; Per the Courier News supporting Assistant Mayor Sharon, the bungling Court Jester for King Jerry. I am writing a letter to them and reminding them that EVERY time they write an unflattering article about the city of Plainfield and the administration to make sure they put the disclaimer: WE TOLD YOU ALL TO VOTE FOR HER, IT'S OUR FAULT TOO.
AND: Nice move on the State Democratic Party paying for those robo calls for Dagget. Suuuuuuuuuure he's independent. How many days will pass before he gets that job offer from Corzine. If I were a Democrat in NJ, this would be the thing that pushed me over the edge and made me never vote Democrat again. So sad and pathetic of the NJ State Democratic Party.
