Maria, who is active in the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District, is renowned for her realist paintings of contemporary subjects. Her largest recent commission was a series of four murals in porcelain enamel on steel at NJT's Union City station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.
The two paintings selected for the Santander show are both of ships, the Costa Concordia and the SS United States.
The cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground within sight of the Itaian shoreline in January 2012, and was shown worldwide in news stories of the disaster, with the ship lying on her side in shallow water.
The SS United States, on which Mijares first sailed to Europe in 1953, is a majestic figure now docked in Philadelphia whose future is uncertain. Though she still holds the world's record for fastest Trans-Atlantic crossing, she no longer suits the style of ship that operators find profitable in today's culture, where one can almost forget one is even at sea.
