Wanna get in touch with Plainfield? Don't start here.

Bounced email from 'plainfieldcommunications@hotmail.com'

Periodically I have to weed through bounced emails to clean up behind those who have dropped or changed their email addresses or internet provider.

Imagine my surprise today to find the above bounceback -- from the mailbox of one of the City's deep-bench communications team.

Now that mailbox has been on my email newsletter list for nearly a year. All of a sudden, the mail is no longer delivered.

Doing a little research on the mysterious message -- "550_Requested_action_not_taken:_mailbox_unavailable" -- turned up this link, which helps to explain what may be going on.

Helpful Leo, from Puget Sound Software, explains that the message may mean the account has been closed or that it does not exist or that the user has exceeded his or her quota.

Now that would really be too bad if you were a businessperson or a media contact attempting to reach one of the Mayor's communications team by email, wouldn't it? (By the way, why would a city employee use a Hotmail account to begin with? -- Ah, but that's another discussion.)

Oh, and there is ONE MORE REASON why the messsage may have bounced -- it is identified as 'spam'.

Spam?!

Now why would anyone at City Hall identify mail from Plainfield Today as spam?
