Council resumes its normal schedule Tuesday. |
Plainfield City Council comes off it summer combined meetings schedule with a big agenda for Tuesday's agenda-setting session (Monday is a holiday).
Perhaps of most interest to the public are the Council's public discussion at this meeting of the upcoming Deer Management Program by Union County, and a discussion of a perennial problem with some downtown merchants -- outdoor displays of retail merchandise.
The deer management discussion brought out a number of animal activists earlier this year.
Merchandise (most prominently mattresses in recent years) in front of stores is a perennial problem. Though it is a citable offense, the public has never really learned why Inspections can't seem to compel compliance.
Perhaps with a new Business Administrator and a newly revitalized SID (whose executive director may have some ideas about what might work) the City can finally begin to make headway with this issue.
Surprisingly, owner Edison Garcia of Faraone's is applying for a two-day festival honoring Latin American Independence to be held on September 14-15.
The surprise comes from the lateness of the application (August 14). I believe the Council previously required a much longer period between these requests and the event. They may waive that but it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Mr. Garcia's most recent foray in July seemed lackluster to this observer (see my post on it here). I have suspected that the Trump administration's menacing tone and actions have frightened a lot of people about large public gatherings such as this. Just my hunch.
I will discuss the agenda in more detail in another post. The business meeting will be on Monday, September 9.
City Council meets at 7:00 PM in the Council Chambers / Courthouse at Watchung Avenue and East 4th Street. Parking available on the street and in the lot across from Police Headquarters.
NOTE: I have seen officers in patrol vehicles allow Council attendees to turn onto 4th Street in front of Police Headquarters to enter the public parking. Exiting is no problem. Be cautious.
