By my records, Saturday's wine tasting by the Friends of the Plainfield Public Library (FOPPL) is the 17th of these annual events. Quite an achievement for this activity begun under the leadership of former Library Director Joe Da Rold!
This year's selections will highlight the wines of South Africa -- with a selection of reds, whites, sparkling wines and ports. Wines have been grown in the Cape Province area of South Africa since the Dutch established a trading post and shipping link in the 1650s.
Each year, the Wine Discovery event focuses on outstanding wines from less familiar regions of the world.

This year's event is Saturday, September 7, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the home of Rob and Kate Fleshler, 1050 Rahway Road.
Proceeds of the event will assist in the Library's programming efforts.
Past FOPPL Wine Discovery events have helped fund many programs and activities -- including the award-winning redesigned Children's Room, computer labs, and special programming.
This year's effort is especially appreciated in light of the budget shortfalls owing to flat funding by the City.
Tickets are $50/person and may be purchased at the Library, online here, or at the door.
FOPPL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is composed of residents and supporters of the Library. If you are interested in joining or helping, there will be representatives at the Wine Tasting.
This year's officers include: Marion Fowler, president; Belinda Smiley, vice president; Greg Hawkins, secretary; and Leana Walcott, treasurer. Horace Baldwin, C.R. Williams and Maxine Marshall serve as board members, with Library Director Mary Ellen Rogan, ex officio.
