Plainfield celebrates its 33rd annual National Night Out Tuesday evening (August 6). It is part of a nationwide event to bring together residents and public safety employees (police, fire, EMS) in local communities.

The event in Plainfield has grown every year since it was started by First Ward Councilor Liz Urquhart in 1986 until it has become one of the most looked forward to events of every Plainfield summer.

This year's observance at City Hall gets under way at 6:30 PM when Mayor Mapp and city officials arrive from their motorcade to parks throughout the city to distribute book bags collected by Plainfield Action Services in anticipation of the end of the summer vacation.

At City Hall, there will be a brief ceremony including the presentation of colors, a rendition of the National Anthem and presentations honoring community leaders.

Besides live music and a performance by the Queen City Mentoring Academy Cadets, there will be a car and bike show, a Kids Fun area, and information tables by various city and community agencies.

Perennial highlights include free hot dogs by the Fire Department volunteers and a 'Touch a Truck' area for kids interested in city vehicles.

Lastly, the Union County Board of Elections will be offering free demonstrations of the new electronic voting system that will be in place with the November General Election.

The system was previewed a few months ago by First Ward Councilor Ashley Davis at one of her community meetings at Richmond Towers, where it drews throngs of interested seniors.

The new system will print and preserve a hard copy of every ballot cast and will allow voters to review the copy before the final casting of their ballot. This is part of New Jersey's initiative to tighten security and enhance voter trust in the system.

Netherwood Heights Neighbors will gather for a National Night Out potluck at Leland Avenue Park, also at 6:30 PM.
