Historic Preservation Commission may discuss Coriell Mansion Tuesday

The dream to turn it into a B&B continues.

Though the formal hearing on the Coriell Mansion originally scheduled for the Historic Preservation Commission this Tuesday (July 23) has been cancelled, an email has been making the rounds saying that a representative of the owner, Jon Steingrabber, is slated to be on hand anyway for an informal discussion.

The owner also has an application before the Planning Board and his stated intention is to develop the mansion as a Bed and Breakfast inn.

Oldtimers will remember this also was the dream of Olive Lynch, who plowed enormous amounts of money into this "hard luck house" before she had to give up her project.

For many years, The Pillars operated as a Bed and Breakfast in the same block of Central Avenue, but fell victim to hard times after the 2008 recession and never recovered.

Unlike some other communities which have developed thriving B&B markets (Vicksburg, MS comes to mind), Plainfield has never developed a B&B ordinance, instead preferring to authorize these businesses through the land use laws.

Once a business is approved in this manner, it need not come back nor be further reviewed.

In the case where a B&B ordinance exists, the businesses are licensed and must pass annual inspections to make sure the business is kept up to snuff.

The Historic Preservation Commission meets at City Hall Library at 7:30 PM, Tuesday, July 23. Parking and entrance in the rear.
