In surprise move, Jerry Green steps down

Plainfield's longtime Democratic leader is stepping down.

In a brief statement released by his legislative office, Assemblyman Jerry Green announced he is stepping down from public life.

Green, who is chair of the Assembly's Housing and Local Services committee as well as being chairperson of both the Union County Democratic organization and the Plainfield Democratic committee, says he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and his charitable activities.

Green came to prominence as Plainfield's de facto Democratic leader in the 1980s after having served as a Union County Freeholder. He will turn 75 at the end of the month.

Friends of the Assemblyman, asking to remain anonymous as they are not authorized to speak publicly, have said that Green is tired of being faulted for every difficulty that pops up in the Queen City. 'They won't have Jerry Green to kick around any more,' he is reported to have said to one source.

Besides devoting himself to his family and charitable activities, Green is said to be mulling a second career as a motivational speaker. This is not unusual, if one recalls that Bill Clinton has been in constant demand as a speaker ever since leaving the White House, and is reported to command six-figure sums for his talks. Green's folksy touch has often been compared to Clinton's.

Reactions from colleagues and political allies are coming in.

'I can hardly believe it,' said former Union County Dem chairperson Charlotte DeFilippo when reached at her King Street home in Hillside. 'Jerry has always been like the firehouse dog, ready to go whenever the bell rings. It will be hard to think of him retiring to a quiet personal life.'

Reached by phone, Councilwoman Gloria Taylor, widow of the late mayor Rick Taylor, who is serving temporarily in the seat vacated by Adrian Mapp when he was elected Mayor last November, said, 'I certainly hope that Sen. Lesniak and the other Union County Democratic leaders don't sent a carpetbagger down here to replace the Assemblyman. That's the last thing we need when we are trying to rebrand ourselves.'

According to the statement, Green is relinquishing all his offices on the day it is dated, April 1.

I wish Assemblyman Green all the best and thank him for his service to the state.

Gloria Taylor needs to understand what a real carpetbagger is and get into the 21st century. She sure doesn't seem capable of leading Plainfield in this century. I hope her replacement will be able to lead and not obstruct moving Plainfield forward.

What gave it away was Jerry spending time on "Charitable Activities". The only charity JG gives to is himself.
