Council asked to designate McWilliams memorial plaza

The Al McWilliams Memorial Committee presented its report to the Plainfield City Council Monday evening, recommending a location for a memorial by the City to the late two-term mayor.

In a presentation by committee members Annie McWilliams, Al's oldest daughter, Linda Payne and Mary Burgwinkle, the group -- with representatives drawn from throughout the city's four wards -- proposed that the City Council designate the triangular public space on the southeast corner of East Front Street and Park Avenue as the 'Albert T. McWilliams Jr. Memorial Plaza'.

The proposal included raising the funding for a statue by public subscription, to be installed at a later date.

The Council received the proposal warmly, and it appears on track for adoption by resolution in time for a special service at Shiloh Baptist Church on Sunday, April 6, the first anniversary of Mayor McWilliams' passing.
