Weekend Roundup: 5K, Cleanups, Animal Blessing, more

City Hall and Crescent Church are sites of
some of this weekend's activities.

Plainfield is busy this weekend with several activities --

FRIDAY: FREE CLASS AT FRENCH SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Judy Waters, Director of the French School of Music, invites all to a free "get acquainted" class this evening to introduce the Paris Conservatory's classic solfege technique. The technique teaches a skill that uses both mind and body in developing in instrumental and vocal performance.

The free event is at 7:45 PM tonight. The French School of Music is at 210 West 8th Street (across from Higgins Home for Funerals).
SATURDAY: HISTORIC QUEEN CITY 5K
The 6th Annual Historic Queen City 5K Walk/Run gets under way Saturday morning at Plainfield City Hall Plaza.

The 1 Mile Fun Walk/Run starts at 9:00 AM, and the 5K starts at 9:30 AM. Come early to have time to register. Entry for the 5K is $25/person, for the 1M it is $15.

There will be awards, vendors and music. All proceeds benefit community nonprofits and scholarships. Premier sponsor of this USATF-sanctioned event is JFK Medical Center. Affiliated sponsor: Plainfield Grassroots CDC.
SATURDAY: QUEEN CITY PRIDE CLEANUP CONTINUES
Also on Saturday, from Noon to 2:00 PM, Queen City Pride continues its weekend cleanups -- this week at Netherwood Station (on the North Avenue side).

Gloves, rakes and trash bags are supplied. All that is needed is willing hands.

The group reported on two excursions last weekend: One in conjunction with Councilor Barry Goode's "Clean The Queen" initiative in the 4th Ward, and a Sunday outing at Netherwood Station's South Avenue side.

According to group organizer Timothy Priano, cleanups are also planned for next weekend.

The group is also taking on the removal of those annoying signs you see posted on telephone poles soliciting used cars and offering to buy your house for cash. To report a location, send an email to queencitypride@gmail.com.
SUNDAY: BLESSING OF ANIMALS AT CRESCENT CHURCH
In an email with the subject line "Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church is going to the dogs", Pastor Lynn Santulli advised of the church's blessing of the animals set for this Sunday (October 9) at the 10:30 AM service.

There will be gifts for attending pets and a special coffee hour with pet-friendly refreshments after the service.

A special offering will be taken up during the service to benefit the Plainfield Area Humane Society.

Please remember, cats and birds should be in cages, and dogs on a leash.

Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church is at East 7th Street and Watchung Avenue. Parking in the church lot on First Place, on the street, or in the Swain Galleries lot.
