Crescent Avenue Church is both on the tour and the site of the Plainfield Symphony's Mahler concert. |
With May and (hopefully) Spring weather finally
here, two contrasting events are offered on Saturday -- the Plainfield
Chamber of Commerce's 2014 Houses of Worship Tour and Mahler's 5th
Symphony as the close to the Plainfield Symphony's 2014 season.
HOUSES OF WORSHIP TOUR
The Plainfield Chamber of Commerce's second annual 'Houses of Worship Tour' showcases eight of the Queen City's impressive church buildings.
From the neo-Gothic historic St. Mary's to the classic New England meetinghouse style of Covenant United Methodist, you will be invited to pause and reflect on the different ways Plainfield congregations find to worship and serve their community.
Among the new additions are the Greater Refuge Church of Christ and the Plainfield Christian Science Church (Independent).
The tour runs from 10 AM to 4 PM rain or shine and starts from St. Mary's Roman Cathloic Church at West 6th and Liberty Streets. After 1 PM, tours will start from neighboring Shiloh Baptist Church at West 4th and Liberty Streets. A reception at Crescent Avenue Church closes the event. Suggested donation: $5/person.
MAHLER: SYMPHONY No. 5
Music Director Charles Prince has chosen Gustav Mahler's monumental 5th Symphony to close the Plainfield Symphony's 2014 season.
Scored for a very large orchestra, the symphony includes Mahler's most-played selection, an Adagietto. The music became part of the musical vocabulary of all Americans when it was led by Leonard Bernstein at the funeral mass for Bobby Kennedy, assassinated presidential candidate and brother of President John F. Kennedy.
The evening begins at 6:00 PM with a pre-concert 'Chat with Charles' as he discusses Mahler's life and this symphony in particular. The concert gets under way at 7:00 PM sharp -- you will want to be early as it is expected to be sold out. Tickets: $50/Reserved, $30/General admission, $20/Seniors/Students; under 12 free.
Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church is at Watchung Avenue at East 7th Street. (Parking in church lot, on street, or in Swain Galleries lot)
