Another way to help in Haitian relief

Child injured in Haitian earthquake

Plainfield residents have another opportunity to help relief efforts in Haiti (see my original post with links for online donations here).

An overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country, many American religious orders and Catholic social service agencies have active programs in the country.

One such is Nuestro Pequeños Hermanos ('our little brothers and sisters', see website here), which has been caring for orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America and the Caribbean since 1954.

Fr. Rick Frechette, a Passionist priest and doctor who is friends with local Catholic activists, runs St. Damien Hospital, damaged in the earthquake but still operable. You can read the story of St. Damien and Fr. Rick's relief efforts on the website, as well as viewing news clips of interviews with NBC and ABC.

Contributions to NPH directly may be made online at their website (be patient, their servers are being stressed from the traffic).

For some, a contribution of this sort may be more satisfying than to a large, faceless NGO.

But whatever your preference, your contribution is badly needed and will be much appreciated.
