Car self-totals on Plainfield's West 7th Street

Now how did he do that?

A man driving east on West 7th Street in Plainfield on Saturday around 5:30 PM managed to total his car -- solo.

This is what I saw when I went out with a gathering crowd of neighbors and passersby.

Alone, in the middle of the street, no skid marks, no other vehicle involved.

And no driver in the car.

The driver had extricated himself -- believe it or not -- and was being examined by the Plainfield Rescue Squad by the time I came outside. (The Rescue Squad is half a block away.)

How did it happen?

Seems he drifted to the right off the roadway, rode up the base of a street tree (which, it turns out, has suffered this insult before) just far enough to cause it to topple over on its roof in the middle of the street.

The roof was crushed, the car looked totalled, but amazingly he crawled out of a smashed window.

The cops said they were going to have a toxicology test done.

Flying high?
