Hidden Plainfield: Multi-Family Twins by Design

Multi-family twins by design, from a pattern book.

So-called 'pattern books' were used from Victorian times forward to sell plans for residential homes in Plainfield and across the country.

Sometimes, as with Sears, one could buy not only the plans, but the actual building materials, all pre-cut and numbered for assembly like a giant 3D jigsaw puzzle.

What is perhaps less well known is that there were multi-family dwellings also built from pattern book plans.

Today's Hidden Plainfield spots two such, built from the same plan. There are nearly a dozen of this particular style in one neighborhood. But there are other models, too, which we may take up at a later date.

Do you know where these properties are?

Answer tomorrow.
